Proverbs 3:5-6 Meaning: Trust in the Lord With All Your Heart
Updated: 2 hours ago
Proverbs 3:5-6 is a favourite for anyone facing a big decision or an uncertain future. In just two verses it shows us how to walk through life with God.
The verses
Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight. (Proverbs 3:5-6, BSB)
The context
Proverbs 1-9 is written like a father teaching his son how to live wisely. In chapter 3 the father urges his child to keep God's teaching close, to be loyal and faithful, and above all to trust the Lord.
What it means
"With all your heart": trust is not partial. It is the whole of us leaning on God.
"Lean not on your own understanding": our view is limited. God sees what we cannot.
"In all your ways acknowledge Him": bring every area of life to Him, not only the big decisions.
"He will make your paths straight": God guides and leads those who trust Him.
Living it out
Write down a decision you are facing. Pray about it, read Scripture, ask wise people for counsel, and then take the next step in trust, knowing that God is leading you.
A short prayer
Lord, I want to trust You with all my heart. I do not see the whole path, but You do. Guide my steps and make my paths straight. Amen.
