John 3:16 Meaning: "For God So Loved the World" Explained
Updated: 2 hours ago
John 3:16 may be the best-known verse in the Bible. Many people call it the Gospel in one sentence. Here is what it says, where it comes from and what it means for you today.
The verse
For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that everyone who believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16, BSB)
The context
Jesus spoke these words to Nicodemus, a respected Jewish teacher who came to Him at night (John 3:1-2). Jesus told him that no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again. Just before verse 16, Jesus compares Himself to the bronze snake Moses lifted up in the wilderness: everyone who looked to it lived, and everyone who believes in the Son will have eternal life (John 3:14-15).
What it means
God's love is the starting point. It is not earned; it comes first.
Love gives. God did not only feel love; He gave His Son.
The invitation is wide: "everyone who believes." No one is too far away.
Eternal life is not only life after death. It is a new life with God that begins now.
The next verse makes the purpose even clearer:
For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him. (John 3:17, BSB)
Living it out
Read John 3 slowly this week. Ask yourself: do I really believe God loves me like this? Then thank Him for it, and share it with one person who needs to hear it.
A short prayer
Father, thank You for loving the world, and for loving me, so much that You gave Your Son. I believe in Jesus. Help me live in Your love today. Amen.
