Many people want to read the Bible but do not know where to begin. Starting at Genesis and trying to read straight through often ends somewhere in Leviticus. Here is a simpler way to build a daily habit that lasts.

1. Start with the life of Jesus

Begin with one of the Gospels. Mark is short and fast-moving; John explains who Jesus is and why He came. Reading about Jesus first gives you the centre of the whole Bible.

2. Read a little every day

Ten minutes a day is better than an hour once a month. Choose a regular time, such as with your morning coffee or before bed, and read one chapter or even a few verses.

3. Use a clear translation

A translation in modern English, such as the New International Version (NIV) or the Berean Standard Bible (BSB), makes it much easier to understand what you are reading without losing faithfulness to the original text.

4. Ask three simple questions

  1. What does this passage show me about God?

  2. What does it show me about people, and about me?

  3. Is there something to believe, obey, change or thank God for today?

5. Turn what you read into prayer

Close by praying about one verse that stood out. Reading and prayer belong together: God speaks through His Word, and we answer Him in prayer.

6. Follow a plan and keep going

A reading plan removes the daily question of what to read. If you miss a day, do not start over or give up. Simply pick up where you left off.

A simple first week

  • Day 1: Mark 1

  • Day 2: Mark 2

  • Day 3: Psalm 23

  • Day 4: Mark 3

  • Day 5: Mark 4

  • Day 6: Psalm 46

  • Day 7: Mark 5
